As part of the joomliance core team we primarily use the custom joomliance fair-but-square license

All our code is available under the following license as long as not specified otherwise:

• The code is available 'as is' without any warranties - the developers are liable for nothing.
• The usage of components is free for non-commercial areas.
• For commercial applications and or support the developers must be contacted directly. Evaluating the code in commercial areas is most welcome though.
  
• You may customize the code to your liking, but will probably lose all hope for free support.
• The code and or it's parts may not be redistributed, neither can patches be made available without the developers consent.
• Trade-ins and feedback is most likely very welcome.
• Possibly used third party libraries might be required, and must be made available by the user.

As a custom license is always a critical point in choosing a software, please keep the following note in mind:

We try to make our work available to a broad spectrum of people, especially to those without the means to spend endless resources on custom components. Since we don't believe in slimmed down, poorly supported downscale versions of software, we offer one package, which everyone can use as they are able to, and everybody can support as they see fit. No limitations or caste like structures. But as we have to pay the rent, want to make sure our families can eat and want to reserve the commercial application of our work for ourselves, we are somewhat restrictive on the re-use and use of our products and charge companies as well as for extendet support. While trying to provide some free and truly open source extensions, income and donations go directly into the development of our mainline products. All updates, bugfixes and such are always benefit the whole, and free support ( in form of support and development ) is provided as well as possible.
